Summer Moments in Puglia
What is it about bella Italia that makes you want to straddle a scooter and channel Sofia Loren?
I’ve been wanting to go to Puglia for several summers and I finally got to do just that with a group of girlfriends for a week of orecchiette pasta, frizzante wine and little else. Tucked away in the heel of Italy, Puglia is known for it’s thumb-shaped pasta, cone-headed Trulli houses and bud-like ‘Pumi’ ornaments and splattered pottery. We were based between Cistenino and Ostuni in the heart of rural Puglia. Plenty of pool time and catch ups were sandwiched with heading to the beach (Ostuni White Beach amongst others) and having dinners at local Osterias in nearby towns and villages like the ridiculously romantic Locorontondo and postcard-pretty Ostuni. One of those trips that gave me a real taste for the region but still left plenty left for next time… I’d love to take Jamie next time; something about Italy and big glasses of chilled red wine in fairy-light clad alleyways make me want to have my own LaLaLand moment.
I’m always in the market for new holiday add-ons sartorially speaking, and for this post I teamed up with ASOS for three new key pieces that felt very at home amidst Puglia’s trullos, cacti and hot, hot, hot temperatures. When I just want a handful of new holiday pieces for my suitcase and most importantly, delivery and returns that are beyond easy in case anything doesn’t fit and you have two days till takeoff, Asos is forever my go-to. It’s always that place that I know I can find affordable summations of what I’m picturing in my pretty specific head at short notice. Linen mini dress? Tick. Gingham shirt? Tick. High-waisted, ribbed, itsy-bitsy, yellow bikini? Tick.
I feel like these three key pieces pretty much sum up that ‘summer in the mediterranean’ feeling. Skirts that look like the lining of a picnic basket in a really, really good way, shorts that feel as light as air (sorry denim, Puglia was just too toasty for you this time) and the simplest swimsuit worthy of an Italian bombshell moment. I love that something this affordable can feel so damn chic and sculpting on. Seriously, if you’re having a shitty fat day, put this swimsuit on, put your shoulders back and I promise you you’ll feel like a smoke show on the beach.
For now, it’s back to the UK and onwards to L.A in a few weeks, but I’m leaving with so many amazing memories from some of Europe’s best bits this summer… I love far flung, exotic destinations, but there’s really nothing better than some of the places right on our (meaning us Brits) doorstep is there?
