Competition Time with Free People

I’ve teamed up with summer favourite Free People again to pull together some favourite pieces and subsequently offer one of you guys the chance to win a £500 gift card to help towards those high summer purchases. You can snap up one of the many pieces I picked and styled below or just put it towards some new holiday garms if you’re headed somewhere further afield in the coming months.

I’ve worked with Free People several times before, always in far flung places like the Caribbean, India and the Maldives, but this time I took the brand’s summer offerings for a spin in my hood in London instead. I’ve always gravitated towards their super beachy, flimsy pieces made for those barefoot locations, but this time I got to play around with slightly more tailored, everyday pieces like denim and jackets which feels kind if refreshing after a lot of holiday-mode posts on here lately.

This little waistcoat and shorts suit was a real surprise favourite of mine. I chose it tentatively, not knowing how I’d really wear it in all honesty, but I ended up loving the mix of suited-and-booted pinstripes with the relaxed, easy fabric and cross back. I originally thought I’d wear this undone over a loose vest top but quickly realised wearing it done up, almost so it becomes a playsuit, looked way cooler. Granted, it could do with some tape (the top really wants you to flash someone at times) but it’s exactly the kind of get-up made for hot, sticky days in the city. I feel like this would easily translate to evenings on holiday too, but somehow it feels just right for the like of New York and London in the peak of summer. I wanted to keep it really low-key hence the slides and basket bag; anything too polished or overly logo-led would completely change the ‘just chucked this on’ vibe of this.

To me, no summer wardrobe, hell any wardrobe, is complete without a couple of great Victoriana blouses. I love the delicate broderie anglaise detailing on this and high-neck, big-sleeve combination would make it a great antidote to little shorts or a leather jacket. I went for a good old pair of blue, vintage-look jeans this time and fell head over heels for these Free People jeans. As you know, I’m a huge advocate of Levis and Redone jeans but these Levis are a bit of a revelation. They have a great little bit of stretch so a million times comfier than some of my staple pairs and they have a flattering subtle kick flare that really works for me. No lying on the floor, forcing that top button to do up but the same snug, vintage-look fit… YES.

Again, despite being London, I like to keep the holiday feels going that bit longer by adding Palmaira sandals and baskets to outfits rather than anything too statement.

This is a classic example of taking that much-loved white beach dress and making it work on home soil. Whereas on holiday, you might chuck this on from the beach, teaming it with wedges and a biker jacket makes it look like it was made for the city rather than just a sartorial holiday hangover. I love the details on this; the little buttons and bows on the sleeves and super girly but again, the jacket tempers this. I’m also obsessed with the kind of faux corset belt seam around the middle; super flattering and nice to wear.

I would size down in this if you’re umming and ahhing between sizes. It has the tendency to slip off your shoulders so you want it to really fit rather than being oversized.

Lastly, we can only rely on summers in the U.K so far, and a good throw-on jacket is something I always have to hand. My go-to jackets in summer, and pretty much the only things I think you need, are denim, leather and brown suede, hence this slice of pecan pie coloured goodness.

I hate ‘rules’ when it comes to getting dressed. Not that I’m in any way avant garde or even really out there in terms of what I like to wear, but I think there are exceptions to every rule so therefore ‘don’t wear this and this’ kind of mantras are often redundant. However, one thing I think I do end up naturally subscribing to, is the legs out OR shoulders out rule, especially in a city. It’s nothing to do with decorum or ‘not showing too much’, it just somehow helps me feel like myself, aka verging just enough on the side of un-showy. So tiny denim shorts feel doable in a city when teamed with a shirt, jacket and beaten-up Converse.
