Summer of the Mule

Fashion Me Now | May Outfits 2016-23

Just like its animal counterpart, the humble mule often gets overlooked for its more pure breed peers, the high heel or the flat slide. Thankfully, this summer, the underdog reigns supreme, the mule is back on the sartorial menu and these 3.1 Philip Lim numbers in a rich, buttery mustard suede were the first pair I ordered…

As a firm fan of a slide and a firm hater of uncomfortable high heels that make me totter and generally feel out of my comfort zone, I am all for the mule. They’re beyond comfy, flattering in their lack of an ankle strap and go with pretty much everything, from kick flares in London to white linen dresses in some unnamed, sunkissed location this summer. Thanks to high stress levels (mostly down to unsuccessful house hunting), I’m all for easy right now and am eternally grateful to the sorts of things that work on multiple levels and you can slip on and immediately be ready for a meeting or a dinner, despite being in a bit of a hole just an hour before. Plus if you work somewhere that has something of a dress code and isn’t down with sandals, I personally think a mule is a great go-between when it gets hotter and stickier. You’ll appease the dress code nazis in the office and your feet will thank you.

So if you’re not already on the mule bandwagon, the only question is why not?
