Lazy Days at Esencia
The second installment from our escape to Hotel Esencia.
Unlike the huts and hotels in Tulum, Esencia’s grounds feel really spacious and green with its palm tree-lined gardens behind the beach serving as home to strutting peacocks and sunbathing iguanas. Not to freak anyone out, but we also saw a tiny red snake and while having cocktails at the bar one evening, some kind of mongoose climbed up a palm tree right in front of us… If you’re an Attenborough fan/nature freak like me, you can imagine how ridiculously excited I got at the latter.
It always seems to take me a few days to unwind when we go away. The first two or three days away always seems to coincide with some urgent work email from home that I can’t ignore, while we simultaneously try to capture as much of the trip as humanly possible. I’m sure any of you that are self-employed can relate to that inability to switch off… But after two days of stressing, I decided it was time to put an out of office on so I could fully appreciate everything from the insanely good shrimp tacos at lunch to the pink sky and long shadows over the beach come 7 p.m. It’s one of those places you’re actually grateful for jet lag waking you up early every morning, so you get even more hours to appreciate the amazingness of it all.
I’m so used to moving around hotels now that I often can’t imagine staying in one place for a week anymore, but Esencia really was one of those places I could picture doing just that and I’m not sure I’ve ever been more envious of the people who were still wallowing on the beach as we headed off to our next stop.
Thankfully, our next pit stop was just as special…
Don’t miss the ultimate avocado fries. I’ve yet to find anywhere in London that does these after discovering them in L.A years ago, so as soon as I saw them on Esencia’s menu, I ordered them to my room while I waited for Jamie to arrive… After that, they became a bit of a daily staple and we ordered them every day as a ‘light’ side at lunch.
Can you tell I’m horribly jet lacked in the above? Blending into the background wearing the breeziest coverup from Beach Cafe…
