When Jamie and I were thinking about where to go away this April, we decided we would do something a little bit different for us and would actually go back to a favourite place rather than heading somewhere new. I think given what I do combined with an innate itch to see as much of the world as possible, we rarely end up revisiting somewhere despite the fact there’s something so comforting about going back to a much-loved destination. Our trip to Tulum three years ago remains one of our favourite trips to date, and after I went back briefly this January, we both decided we wanted to go back to the Caribbean coast of Mexico and revisit some old favourites while also discovering new places and hotels that have been on my bucket list for a while.
Nestled on a quiet stretch of picture-perfect beach called Xpu Ha, about an hour and a half from Cancun airport, I’d read a lot about the new(ish) and super stylish Hotel Esencia, so were really excited to go there ourselves. While I love wandering to different places for dinner and lunches on holiday, there’s something so relaxing about staying somewhere for a few days that requires zero thought day-to-day. Instead, you can fall into that amazing routine of finding favourite things on the menu, lolling around on the same sun lounger each day and generally getting into holiday mode. We’re those people that rarely stay more than 3 nights in one place so in order to make sure we come home actually feeling rested, I’m realising it’s really important to occasionally take the pressure off and just enjoy where you’re staying.
Hotel Esencia was the absolute perfect place to do just that. With a leafy, private plunge pool in the garden, our white-washed room was a real sanctuary with beautiful books, throws and little design touches making for a really personal feel. Coffee, tea and pastries are left outside your room every morning (love it when hotel’s do that) so you can have a caffeine fix before heading to breakfast or a morning yoga lesson. Especially if you’re travelling from Europe and the jet lag plays havoc with your body clock… From there, we’d have breakfast in the shade before decamping to the beach with the day only punctuated with meals, each and every one pivoting around the insanely delicious vats of guac, the occasional stroll down the white sand and body surfing in the waves.
For now, I’ll let the pictures do the talking and there’ll be more from beautiful Esencia next time.
I’m obsessed with this bikini from Monday Swimwear, the label by Aussie dream girls Tash Oakley and Devin Brugman. I would never normally go for an underwired bikini but this feels really low-key and relaxed despite the more structured shape.
I got this sarong in India but there are some good options for shibori scarves on Etsy.
