Straight Up

Fashion Me Now | Denim Talk_-4

There’s been a lot of talk about the end of skinny jeans of late. I’m not one for things being ‘in’ or ‘over’, nor will I be giving up a good pair of skinny black drainpipes anytime soon… But that’s not to say there isn’t room for a whole load of other shapes in your jean drawer. Take the straight leg for example, a staple of mine in the summer with sneakers or slides but they often get forgotton at this time of year as you lose sight of what actually goes with them other than easy-breezy holiday essentials.

But when you think about it, they need no more thought than those black skinnies and work with exactly the same winter essentials. There’s something nostalgically 90s about blue-wash straight jeans with black ankle boots; the kind of thing Joey and Jen wore in their college days in Dawson’s Creek, or just your mum back in the day. And when you rug up sufficiently on top, you don’t even notice that airy ankle situation.

Finding perfect vintage denim is tricky but thankfully this Topshop pair ticks all the boxes and there’s no need to devote an entire Saturday to trawling boxes of dusty denim. The button fastenings (no zip) add to that vintage feel and they sit high on the waist without accentuating your hips like the ‘Mom’ style. Ideal with chunky knits and Acne boots now and a simple white tee and leather jacket once Spring arrives.
