A Weekend in Seville

Lucy-Williams-Fashion-Me-Now-Seville-Travel-Diary - 08

Let me introduce you to one of the loveliest cities I’ve ever been to….

Lured in by Tumblr-esque images of tiled palaces, horse-drawn carriages, late-night tapas bars and lines of orange trees, I’ve been hankering to visit the Andalucian city for a while. And speaking of orange trees, after meeting (and drinking) Cointreau earlier this year in Paris and discovering they source the majority of their bitter oranges from the region, I found the perfect partner with which to explore the area with. After chatting it over, we decided we should team up and combine my love of travel with Cointreau’s love of oranges and a few month’s later, I touched down in Seville with the sole mission of putting together a city guide and photo diary. Mission accepted.

We planned the trip with the lovely team at Original Travel who hooked us up with our two bolt holes for the trip, both of which were already firmly on my ‘must stay’ radar. In Seville, we stayed at Corral del Rey, one of those lovely, home-from-home hotels that had everyone who’d been sighing with dreamy nostalgia when we told them where we were staying before we left. Beautifully decorated and delicious breakfasts aside, the maim bonus of this B&B is the fantastic staff and all the helpful hints they dole out along the way. Within half an hour of arriving, we’d been walked through a map, had dinner booked and Flamenco tickets reserved. And this isn’t the kind of place that sends you to the tourist watering hole round the corner; they seemed to instinctively know the kinds of places we’d like and we love every one of their foodie recommendations. Combine this with Original Travel’s itinerary (restaurants, sights, useful tips) that arrived through our letterbox before we left, and we sacked off TripAdvisor for the entire trip. A few of the places we personally tried (and loved) are below…

ConTenedor | Delicious, locally-sourced, organic restaurant for when you’re tired of tapas.
Petit Comite | Modern tapas in a laidback atmosphere.
Ovejas Negras | Great, buzzy lunch spot with both traditional and contemporary tapas.
On same street at Ovejas Negras, there are lots of other lovely Tapas and wine spots that are worth stopping by
El Rinconcillo | Seville’s oldest tapas bar. Doesn’t get going till late but worth swinging by for the atmosphere and various characters. The square beyond has some lovely spots for a casual, cheap glass of wine and a side of croquettes.

Seville is one of those rare, amazing cities that instantly makes you feel at ease. Unlike lots of cities, you don’t need to get hung up on going to the coolest restaurants, or that bar you’ve seen everyone at on instagram (we’ve all been there). Instead, you can just take a map, get lost, get lost some more and generally wander the beautiful, colourful streets while stopping off wherever you fancy. It’s also totally walkable so no confusing Metro ticket machines or expensive cab fares. Colourful streets, tiled walls, rows of scooters, wafting palm trees and incredible, warm weather made this the ideal place to while away a weekend.

It’s without doubt one of the most photogenic place I’ve been to too.  Every corner you turn there’s another tiled doorway or bougainvillea draped wall that’s begging for a picture. And we obliged every time…

On our first day, after getting lost (I defy anyone not to get lost in Seville at least once) and hiding from the searing midday sun with a drink by the river, we headed for the Alcazar. If you go to Seville, there is no question this needs to be on your hit list…

The historical home of Spain’s royal family, this place is a total wonder and the oldest palace in Europe still in use. The carved ceilings, glass-ceilinged atriums and rooms tiled from top-to-bottom in amazing colours was just the beginning of a seemingly endless, beautiful journey. Just as you think you’ve reached the peak, you go round a corner and find even more amazingness. I could have gone back everyday and still been blown away…

Getting the idea yet? Sorry if there are too many photos, but I just couldn’t bring myself to rule out any of these beautiful details and patterns.

Even these photos don’t really do the place justice. The sheer scale of it and the lovely atmosphere of it underneath a cobalt sky is pretty hard to fully get across. We only tore ourselves away because my new Paul Andrew espadrilles were taking some breaking in…

We headed back to the hotel for some laptop time, a quick shower and a few blister plasters, before heading back out for a a wander and dinner in that order. After being in the Southern hemisphere recently, I forgot how great Southern Europe is in the Summer, not getting dark till 10 p.m or later… In fact, everything’s later here. No one eats dinner before 9 at the earliest, and bars only get going after 11. So plenty of time to have a mid-afternoon siesta or work catch-up while still making the most of all the city has got going on…
