The Suede Mini
Sometimes the catwalks’ offerings surreptitiously make their way into your subconscious so much so you unwittingly become a walking clone of a favourite collection.
This season, thanks to a combination of Chloe and Saint Laurent, I’m obsessing over brown suede, embroidered blouses, paisley prints and velvet pussy bows, and am having no qualms at throwing them altogether at once. I’m normally an advocate of breaking things down and wearing those trend-led pieces one-by-one to save from looking like a walking mannequin, but sometimes it feels good to pile them all on at once and really get behind those reimagined retro looks. And the starting point for all this has to be the suede mini skirt, aka my personal must-have this season.
After week’s of searching for the perfect A-line brown suede mini skirt with 70s style poppers up the front, I gave up and opted for this vintage one found in the basement of Topshop’s Oxford Circus store. It wasn’t what I originally had in my head, but the colour is spot on and the simplicity of it means it lends itself to twice the amount of top halves. I now have my eye on Topshop’s black version so I have a feeling this 60s-meets-70s inclination has legs…
A guy friend of mine told me in no uncertain terms he wasn’t so sure, deeming this particular mini ‘mumsy’. I told him simply it wasn’t for him… Maybe that’s why I love it so much.
