During those hedonistic years at university, my wardrobe had it’s very own ‘going out’ section, dedicated to playsuits, PVC trousers, bodycon dresses and sequinned shorts. Yes really.
However once you come out the other side and enter the real world, you quickly realise your wardrobe has to work harder. I want jeans I can wear with trainers to Tescos and heels to cocktail parties. I want leather mini skirts I can wear with chunky jumpers to breakfast meetings and silk camisoles for date night. Nowadays, my day-to-night transition is much less of a Jekyll and Hyde transformation, and more about updating the most basic look with a hero piece that subliminally says ‘Friyay!’.
Enter, these feathery, frothy sandals from Topshop. Now, I realise these might not be for everyone; I didn’t even know they were for me initially. But after they caught the eye of my inner cosmopolitan-swigging Carrie Bradshaw (emphasis on inner), I quickly realised these were going to be my meal ticket for festive dressing this year.
Paired with my faithful vintage Levis and a simple Tuxedo-style silk shirt (not sure what I’d do without one of these when it comes to getting dressed after 6 p.m), they let me indulge that little voice that wants something a bit special and OTT come December 1st, without changing what I’m all about. Whenever I get ready to go out these days, I always find myself applying the age old opposites attract theory in a big way. The more statement the shoes (which is a rarity I’ll admit), the baggier and more boyish the rest of me becomes. I’d throw on my biker jacket or vintage fur coat over the top and wear this to a dinner party or out for Christmas cocktails with old friends. And if the conversations not up to much, you can always just kick back and stare at those shoes….
Huge thanks to Studio Ashby for our beautiful shoot location and Topshop for working with me on this post.
