Despite previous musings on white (ever the annoying paradox), black is a real summer favourite of mine and never far from reach all year round. We often associate black with outerwear (looking at you leather jackets, crombie coats and arctic-ready parkas), but as long as the material’s slinky and the shape’s loose, there’s no reason not to embrace black on a boiling hot day. I actually think it highlights a tan even more than white – is that a blonde thing? – and it’s somehow more discreet than UV bright white (plunging neckline and back of this Reformation playsuit not included in that statement of course). The older, wiser, chain-smoking sister of that white summer dress if you will. And as fun as it is to play the frivolous ingenue, it’s definitely worth embracing the darkside from time to time.
