Underneath It All
I don’t know about you, but my underwear drawer has had a history of being neglected. I’ve been guilty in the past of excessively shopping for every other drawer and forgetting about the drawer that gets opened before all others. Now however, I think I’ve figured out the real importance of what lies beneath and I know exactly what I want wear underneath everything else.
I’ve gone through loads of phases with lingerie over the years. The phase where I was obsessed with matching, overpriced sets that I couldn’t really afford and never actually wanted to wear. The phase where I really didn’t care at all about what undies I was wearing and simultaneously felt kind of crap about myself which was probably a bit of a chicken and egg situation. And lastly the phase where I rediscovered wearing the comfiest cotton pieces only to over-wear and over-wash until they went grey and gross. Needless to say, none of these phases are ideal in the extreme but luckily I’ve found a happy medium now where I rely on great black, white, nude and the odd burst of pink in lace and cotton, and thus love discovering a good brand that reflects just my aesthetic is always much-appreciated. The kind of pieces that feel everyday under clothes but still look a little special without too many frills, bells and whistles. Enter Iris & Lilly who I’ve teamed up with to style up some of my favourite, everyday lingerie styles and the little styling tweaks that make them work even harder. No suspenders or red lacy thongs here… Just good, affordable not-so-basic basics that are exactly the kind of thing I couldn’t get dressed without.
Ultimately good underwear isn’t about anyone else, its about you. And as such, your collection of knickers and bras shouldn’t massively fluctuate depending on the how much time you’re spending sans clothes. I know that might sound ridiculous if your in the throes of a new romance and constantly getting high on buying new pieces of lacy dental floss, but it really is true. For me, great undies that feel good and look good under clothes are the basis for every good day and good outfit, and help me feel confident from the get-go. And haven’t we all been there when you go shopping and your whole mood plummets in the changing room thanks to feeling like shit thanks to that ill-fitting bra, granny pants and a 360 degree mirror situation, guaranteed to stop any nice new swimwear purchases happening for that upcoming vacay that’s for sure. Please say we’ve all been there guys! Anyway, needless to say having a good underwear drawer full of the best kind of basics is a sure fire way to start and finish your day on a high and something I think I’ve just about honed now.
I don’t (ok, can’t) do cleavage and rarely do wired bras (although I’m trying to don them a bit more now). This black, moulded wire bra has me converted away from my beloved black lace triangles for the first time in ages. It fits like a dream, gives me proper shape without padding and is so satisfyingly simple and comfortable, two qualities I absolutely need in my delicates drawer. Holidays aside, the one thing I’m a real stickler for is zero VPLs under silk slip dresses. I have a firm anti-thong policy so a couple of good pairs of nude seamless and/or boyish numbers are a must for me in terms of basics. Ok they’re not the prettiest to look at, but look after them so they keep their colour and shape and they’re actually kind of nice in they’re own way.

Personally, I’m not into underwear rules as such. I like a bit of black lace bra peeping from underneath a silk shirt or a black bra under a white t-shirt. It just makes everything feel more ‘undone’ and when undies look this pretty, it would be rude to keep them permanently out of sight wouldn’t it…
And did I mention this black sculpted balcony bra kind of makes me feel like a 00s Carrie Bradshaw running around her apartment. Only a good thing in my book… And it really does put my seamed triangle bras to shame when it comes to working with t-shirts and tighter knits. Feel like this guy might be a bit of a game-changer when it comes to getting dressed from now on. Case in point, this bra under my ribbed polo neck below. If I wasn’t a believer that the right lingerie is the basis for all good outfits, I am now.
