Welcome to my new favourite place to Tulum…
I never subscribe to things being ‘out’ or ‘over’ and can safely say that despite these words being bandied around about Tulum, it remains one of my favourite places to visit. I find it so funny that there are places a million times more developed than Tulum that don’t get tarnished with this brush and I honestly just fall more in love with this place every time I go. Go in April and the seaweed has gone, the weather is perfect, the parties have died down and the beaches have emptied out dramatically…. In short, it’s still as beautiful, barefoot and laidback as it was when I first went three years ago and I know this will just be one of many visits to this little strip of Mexican paradise.
But back to the incredible place we stayed. We discovered Sanara through Mr and Mrs Smith (forever a favourite site to get a good dose of holiday porn) and as soon as we stepped into our beautiful room moments from the beach we knew we’d made the right choice. It’s definitely at the more luxury end of Tulum digs, but still feels totally at one with the outdoors and the whole ethos of the area. Locally-made dream catchers hang above the beds, massive windows flood the rooms with light and you’re at the southern end of Tulum beach which to me, is the nicest end of Tulum as the beach gets wider and more powdery the further south you head. One of the real highs of this place has to be the incredible food at its restaurant The Real Coconut Kitchen – even if you don’t stay at Sanara, you have to try this place. The brain child of Sanara’s co-founder Daniella Hunter, we sampled breakfast, lunch and dinner and each and every one was insanely good. Think chia seed puddings, plantain pancakes, goodness bowels, guacamole gazpacho and shrimp tacos… Basically exactly the kind of food you want to eat in paradise. It not only tasted good, it really inspired me to get more into cooking and eating well at home after months of eating fairly mindlessly. In the other evenings, we headed to old favourites Hartwood for ribs, ceviche and steak (it is worth the hype) and Posada Margarita for pasta.
It also has one of the best yoga and wellness centres in Tulum (had it on good authority from my friend Caroline who is a yoga instructor out there) with an amazing glass studio that looks out over the waves. Speaking of Caroline, my first evening at Sanara she very kindly came and gave me a a 90 minute private yoga lesson. Without doubt, the best yoga lesson I’ve ever had… We’ve known each other since we were 11 years old and while she’s been teaching in Tulum now for 5 years, this was the first time we’d be able to practise together. She kind of blew me away at how knowledgable she was and she stretched my poor tech neck and back out so much, I felt brand new again afterwards. Plus, she has the kind of body us mere mortals can but dream about…. More on Caroline and her yoga later on in this blog.
Our own private hammock deck (complete with roll top bath out of shot) and just a few snap shots of the dreamy interiors at Sanara.
Lazing in palm shadows in Tulum beach…
The brilliant Caroline G-W, my yoga guru for an evening and the person single handedly responsible for renewing my love of yoga. Incredibly envious of that bendy back (I have the back of geriatric) and those abs of steel.
She runs yoga retreats in Tulum (and other places around the world occasionally like India and Croatia), which I am desperate to join one day. Yoga and paddleboard yoga on a beautiful lagoon for all levels – plus you get to enjoy beautiful Tulum while at it. The photos look so much fun… Determined to one day find a date to do it as I swear you would come home like a new person.
Check her site out here for dates and info.
Forever coveting those wooden chairs and overpriced Mexican water bottles….
My favourite time of day… Post-shower, pink skies and ready for margaritas.
