Another Paradise in the Atolls
After three days at Conrad Rangali Island, it was time to head to our next little patch of paradise in the Maldives…
One seaplane and one speedboat late, and we were mooring up at the beautiful Huvafen Fushi and checking into a new water bungalow standing proudly over that mass of turquoise. All the islands and resorts in the atolls share white sand, blue seas and palm trees, but they all have there own personalities too. Huvafen immediately felt intimate, cool and well, sexy. The rooms are contemporary and the service is slick but it manages to keep that barefoot, low-key atmosphere that immediately makes you feel at home.
As with Conrad, one of our favourite places to hang out was our private deck which looked out over the sapphire lagoon as far as the eye could see and got the sun all day long. This is where we started and ended our days, reading on the massive day bed, snorkelling around the reef below and sunning ourselves in the plunge pool. There’s even a glass floor in the living room so you can check out who’s swimming around below from inside too (make sure to look down at night – that was when the rainbow fish came out to play). Our first night we kicked back, ordered room service and ate it in bed (yep you heard) with a movie before getting up early the next day to explore our new digs. As someone who actually needs to have dinner in tracksuit bottoms and a top knot once-in-a-while in order to stay sane while travelling, this was pretty much heaven….
Huvafen definitely wins when it comes to infinity pools; without doubt it’s one of the best pools I’ve ever been lucky enough to wallow around it. I swear in most of the photos, I can barely tell where the pool ends and that deep blue sea begins… The shore-like shallow end quickly became my favourite place to cool off after lunch too. Talking of lunch (and why wouldn’t you want to), our favourites were the over-baked pizzas at Fogliani’s and the amazing raw food restaurant called, well, Raw. If you’ve been to Nama in London, you will love Raw – ironically the pizza’s pretty damn good there too. Definitely make time for lunch at this place – it felt like exactly the kind of thing you want to eat when the sun’s beating down and you’re feeling fresh and salty from the water. I swear I would have stayed an extra week just for those lunches… But then again, who wouldn’t want to stay forever when paradise looks this good?
