The Italian Job
A few weekends ago I finally made it to the Italian riviera for
an affair a trip to remember.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s instagram and pinterest accounts seem to be stuffed full of dreamy shots from Positano, Capri, Ravello and Amalfi, and I’ve long been hankering to discover arguably the most beautiful corner of Italy for myself. My first taste of the Amalfi good life was short but oh so sweet. Thirty-six hours in and out and yet it gave me a taste for what might be romance incarnate…
We stayed at the stunning Santa Caterina Hotel in Amalfi, which is pretty much everything you dream of when you picture the Amalfi Coastline. Jade green tiled bathrooms, vine-covered terraces and pine-scented cliffs surrounding the rocky beach club, this place was old school Italian luxury at its best. I imagine those of us that have allowed ourselves to picture the perfect honeymoon from time to time (as an un-engaged person, personally I feel this is very acceptable), this comes pretty close…
In true typical fashion, we seemed to bring the dodgy British weather with us and our one day in Italy saw the first drops of rain and cloud for months, an irritant the waiters couldn’t help but observe with a wry smile. Still, the feeling of being out of the water, bingeing on pasta and little lemon sponge cakes (an Amalfi speciality), and taking a final swim in the sea before the summer draws to an end was a real treat.
Like all good summer romances, it was over far too quickly, left an indelible mark on my mind and I’m already planning on heading back next summer to rekindle the fire. But for now, I’m doing as the lovesick do and looking back with rose-tinted wistfulness on photos and memories of what once was…
Heading to lunch at La Conca Del Sogno was a real highlight of the trip. A beautiful, rocky cove and delicious food (stuffed, fried courgette flowers, pasta with clams and caprese salad) made it the perfect place to while away an afternoon… And it was the perfect excuse to get out on a boat for the day which is always ok with me.
From lunch, it was time to head back to Amalfi, passing by Positano and secret little fishing coves en route, for yet more pasta, fish and wine…
